Tantalum is a metal element with atomic number of 73 and chemical symbol of Ta. The element's corresponding elementary substance is steel gray metal, which has extremely high corrosion resistance. No matter under cold and hot conditions, it does not react with, concentrate on or aqua regia. Tantalum mainly exists in tantalite, coexisting with niobium. Tantalum has a moderate hardness and is highly ductile, allowing it to be drawn into thin wire foil. Its coefficient of thermal expansion is very small. Tantalum has excellent chemical properties and extremely high corrosion resistance. It can be used to manufacture evaporating vessels, etc., as well as electrodes, rectifiers and electrolytic capacitor of electronic tubes. Used in medical practice to make thin sheets or threads to repair damaged tissues. Although tantalum has strong corrosion resistance, its corrosion resistance is due to the formation of a stable tantalum pentoxide (Ta2O5) protective film on the surface.
