What Are Brake Pads and Rotors?

Brake pads and rotors are crucial components of a vehicle's braking system, responsible for slowing down and stopping the vehicle. They work together to create the friction necessary to halt the vehicle's movement.

1. Brake Pads: These are flat, metal-backed plates with a friction material attached to one side. They are typically made from materials like ceramic, semi-metallic compounds, or organic compounds. When you press the brake pedal, the brake pads are forced against the rotating surface of the brake rotor/disc. This contact generates friction, which converts the kinetic energy of the moving vehicle into heat, slowing down the vehicle and eventually bringing it to a stop.


2. Brake Rotors (or Discs): Rotors are flat, round metal discs that are mounted to the wheel hub. They spin along with the wheels and are clamped by the brake pads when the brake pedal is applied. The friction generated between the brake pads and the rotors slows down the rotation of the rotor, which in turn reduces the speed of the vehicle.


When you apply the brakes, hydraulic pressure from the master cylinder forces the brake pads against the rotors. This action creates friction, which converts the vehicle's kinetic energy into thermal energy, dissipating it as heat. This process slows down and ultimately stops the vehicle.


Over time, both brake pads and rotors wear down due to this friction and heat, and they need to be periodically inspected and replaced to maintain optimal braking performance and ensure safety while driving. Regular maintenance and timely replacement of brake pads and rotors are essential to keep the braking system functioning effectively.
